Lots of patients ask why is it that my earlier doctors didn’t recognize keratoconus?
There are a lot of reasons for that. One is it was considered, until recently a very rare disease, so they didn’t think of it. The other is some of the diagnostic equipment that the scans are very expensive; they don’t have them, and in general we didn’t have great ways to treat keratoconus.
So what’s the rush to diagnosis? We now have great ways to treat keratoconus, really particularly the epithelium on both eyes, same time, back to work next day approach. So now it matters more, but it is the standard thing. Patients come in; they’ve told their doctors they don’t see well, they don’t see well, and the doctor says it’s just astigmatism.
We’re working on the educational process for that.
